Former president Noynoy Aquino dies



 FORMER president Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino 3rd passed away on Thursday, former Interior secretary Manuel Roxas 2nd has confirmed. He was 61.


"PNoy RIP (rest in peace). [He] was rushed to hospital early this morning and passed after efforts to revive failed. Please pray for him. Salamat (Thank you)," Roxas said in a statement.


Initial reports said Aquino was brought to the Capitol Medical Center in Quezon City early Thursday for undisclosed reasons.




Talk of Aquino's passing had been going around earlier in the day. A senator who requested anonymity confirmed this to The Manila Times.

Aquino, who championed the "Daang Matuwid" and "Kayo ang Boss Ko" slogans during his administration, served as the country's 15th president from June 2010 to June 2016.


The son of the pro-democracy icons the late president Corazon Aquino and former senator Benigno Aquino Jr. was born in Manila on February 8, 1960.



Aquino's health condition was put on the spotlight in December 2019. He was confined at a Makati hospital for a week to undergo a scheduled medical checkup.


Former deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte had dispelled speculations that the former president was seriously ill, saying his condition was not critical. She also relayed Aquino's thanks to those who sent prayers and well-wishes.
