GMA-7 host Willie Revillame is notable for various reasons, but aside from his catchy Tagalog ditties, he is known for giving away jackets in his game shows. In fact, his line “Bigyan ng jacket” has become an iconic remark given to someone who did something incredible. Despite transferring from one network to another, the prolific game show host finally found his home at the Kapuso network. “Wowowin” never fails to rack up crowd and viewership for the show’s premise of amusing contestants, funny co-hosts, tempting prizes, and of course, Willie himself. That’s why a couple of name and network changes later, Willie’s almost one-man show remains a hit among the masses.
For the singer-host’s 57th birthday episode last January 26, Willie admitted that he didn’t want any greetings. As such, he chose to make others happy by doing something grand: giving away cellphones to the 600-people studio audience.
According to showbiz website PEP, Willie surprised everyone with his ‘souvenir,’ but not before giving a heartfelt speech. He said:
“Oras na meron kayong gagawin na gimik, magagalit ako sa inyo kasi gusto ko ako ang magreregalo sa inyo at napakasuwerte niyo dahil natiyempo ang araw na ito na kayo ang kasama ko.
Kung anuman ang ibibigay ko sa inyo, yung abot kaya namin at sa abot kaya ko. Huwag kayong mag-alala, it’s a souvenir, kahit papaano, makakatulong sa inyo.”
The host was full of emotions about the suffering of fellow Filipinos, saying that there was no need to have a celebration amidst the misfortune of others.
“Alam niyo na sinadya ko na walang bumati sa akin [ng happy birthday]. Sinadya ko na wala lang ito. Ayoko na ng party, sa mga pinagdaanan natin, yung Marawi, mudslides sa ibang mga bansa, yung Mayon volcano…
Maraming tao ang nahihirapan. Hindi ko na kailangan pa na mag-celebrate. Sapat-sapat na ang kung ano ang meron ako sa buhay ko.”
Willie also gave a hint of bigger things to come for the third anniversary of “Wowowin,” pointing out that the show made it through because of strong support from the viewers.
“Never akong sinaraduhan ng pintuan ng station. Alam niyo bakit?
Hindi dahil sa akin, dahil ang programang ito, nagbibigay ng saya, ligaya, pagmamahal at pag-asa sa bawat Pilipino.”
In a previous report, Willie jetted off to Macau with his show’s co-hosts and staff as his birthday blowout to them.
