Recently, veteran broadcast-journalist, radio and TV host, and RGMA President Mike Enriquez surprised the public when its home network GMA-7 released a statement.
According to the statement they released, the news anchor and TV host informed them that it will be gone for a long time because he needs to pay attention to his condition and undergo a medical procedure.
This is not the first time Mike has said goodbye to work because in 2018 he also filed for a medical leave of absence to prepare for his quadruple heart bypass surg3ry.
According to the released full statement of the network management,
“GMA Network, Inc. has announced that its senior radio-tv anchor and concurrent RGMA Network, Inc. president Mike Enriquez will take a medical leave of absence. He will undergo a medical procedure that will require hospital confinement and, afterward, a minimum of three months isolation periods as advised by his doctor. He is expected to be back at work in time for GMA’s massive Eleksyon 2022 coverage.
“In a statement, GMA Network Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon said, “We support Mike’s decision to undergo the procedure that he needs. We ask for everyone’s prayers and we wish him Godspeed. We look forward to welcoming Mike back as soon as he is cleared to return to work.”
Gozon added, “Mike said he looks forward to the healing he has been praying and preparing for. He also looks forward to resuming his duties specially for GMA’s Eleksyon 2022 coverage.”
On August 22, 2018, when Mike publicly announced his scheduled bypass sur6ery as well as the fact that he had a kidney problem. According to him, he inherited the dis3ase from his father and needed regular treatment.
He also added that the heart surg3ry he had to undergo was a common operation that he did not have to fear. His doctors also made sure that he could return to her normal activities after undergoing them.
The following year, it was reported that his kidney disease was in its advanced stages and that he needed a transplant. As he prepares for his heart bypass surg3ry, he is also praying that he will qualify for a kidney transplant. It is also difficult because he is going through this treatment where he has to undergo dialysis three times a week. After each session, he felt better and those procedures were difficult for his age because his body was already battered by dialysis.
His doctors also prepared her for a transplant. He also underwent further examination to determine if he was eligible for it.
It will also be recalled that in his previous interview, he said that the original reason for his confinement in the hospital was not because of his heart condition but because of his congested lungs which was also probably caused by his diabetes. The rise in his blood sugar he said was most likely due to damage to his kidneys. Doctors saw this after he underwent several medical tests.
When they did the ECG or Electrocardiogram, the doctors found something wrong with his heart, he underwent a 2D echo and angiogram. It was there that he was told he needed a heart bypass because his heart was found to be blocked in three to four arteries.
The only beauty of what Mike went through was that it didn’t become an emergency case and he even planned his operation and he was diagnosed with a physical problem early on and was able to deal with it. Before his heart bypass, he was fitted with a pigtail or coil tube to drain the water from his lungs. He added that the doctors who examined him also helped with his father’s treatment.
Mike added that once a month, he would visit his father’s grave with the family and lay flowers. And on one of his visits, Mike even joked with his father and told all he would inherit here that he had kidney, heart, and lung problems.
After his heart bypass sur6ery, he has to avoid many foods such as nuts and beans, and also one of his favorite forbidden fruits is banana. He said it was bad for his kidneys and he had to eat a lot of protein because he was undergoing dialysis. He also needs to monitor his water intake and cannot drink coffee. But sometimes he can’t avoid it because he’s also a coffee drinker.
He also needs to exercise often but he should not get tired and he also needs to avoid stress. His cardiac rehabilitation is also continuing after the heart sur6ery. Because he loves to travel with his wife and some friends, he was also advised to avoid long travel hours.
Mike admitted that he will undergo di4lysis for the rest of his life unless he undergoes a kidney transplant. But he could not do that in those days because his heart was still weak so he hoped that when the right time came they would find a kidney donor when they needed it.
